Northside Hill Neighborhood Association
Our History
The Northside Hill neighborhood in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, has a history that reflects the city’s industrial and residential expansion. Established in the late 1800s, the area first attracted workers from Eau Claire’s booming lumber mills. Modest houses and small businesses quickly sprang up along the neighborhood’s grid of streets, serving as home to families employed downtown and along the river.
Through the 20th century, Northside Hill experienced gradual growth and modernization. The arrival of new schools and the expansion of city services brought increased stability, while architectural styles shifted from Victorian and Craftsman homes to ranch and split-level designs by the mid-century. Today, Northside Hill is recognized for its blend of historic character and modern amenities, serving as a testament to Eau Claire’s changing economy and the resilience of its communities.
Our Neighborhood Association
The neighborhood’s tradition of grassroots engagement has remained strong. That spirit led to the re-formation of the Northside Hill Neighborhood Association in 2022, bringing new energy and opportunities for connection after a 25-year hiatus. Following an initial outreach campaign, elections were held and bylaws were signed at our first Annual Meeting at McDonough Park, August 31, 2022.
Our leadership consists of 7 elected members of the Steering Committee. We're not a homeowners association: There are no dues and all adults who live within the neighborhood boundaries are automatically full voting members, while local businesses and organizations are welcome as non-voting participants.
Fun Fact: You can view the bylaws and other resources of the association in the Resources section!
What We've Accomplished
Since re-launching, we’ve built momentum the old-fashioned way: fundraising with thrift sales and brat stands, getting our social media and email list established, and showing up for each other as neighbors. We’ve worked with the city to improve Birch Street and pedestrian safety, partnered with the Parks Department to enhance local parks, and brought the community together with events like our annual picnic at McDonough Park. Each step forward is thanks to the active participation and support of neighbors like you.
What We're Doing Now
Our focus today is on growing those connections—championing new park projects, seeking grants to support improvements, and making sure resident voices are heard at City Hall. We’re always on the lookout for new ideas and new faces, and we invite everyone to join us as we keep building Northside Hill’s future together.
